This Is How To Protect Your Home From Weather Damage

Your home protects you from the weather, but for it to continue to do this effectively, you also need to learn how to guard it from weather damage. Read on to find out how.

Clean your gutters

It’s such a simple task, but cleaning your gutters regularly can help protect your home from leaks and even flooding. The problem that cleaning your gutters solves is that it prevents them from being blocked and overflowing down the walls of your home. Something that over time can lead to issues such as dampness and leaks.

To that end using a long ladder to get up to roof height and clean your gutters is well worth it. Just be sure to wear protective gloves in case you come across anything unsavory in there. You may even want to install wire cages over your gutters as this will prevent debris such as dead leaves and branches getting in and make cleaning them out a breeze. Cages can also stop birds from nesting in your gutters which can also clog them up and stop them from working.

Check your roof

Another important aspect of protecting your home from weather damage is regularly checking your roof. Indeed, your home’s roof is one of the most crucial aspects of its structure, because it protects both you and your possessions from the elements and weather.

Unfortaly, as roofs do such hard work, it’s also common to find issues that need to be addressed when you check them. For instance, if you discover a few shingles missing or a single hole that is responsible for a leak, then repairs by a professional may be enough to save your roof.

However, if you check your roof and notice more extensive damage then a full roof replacement may be something to consider. Indeed, by replacing an old or aged roof you can be sure of its integrity against the elements for the coming winter.

Trim your trees

While most of us love the idea of living in a property that is surrounded by beautiful green trees, what many do not realize is that trees too close to your home can pose a risk.  The reason that trees can be risky is that if they are not trimmed consistently, then old and dying branches can be blown off during a storm and hit your home, causing damage to windows, roofs and even walls.

With that in mind, if you can afford to have a professional tree surgeon come and trim your branches regularly, you should. If this is out of your budget, then it may be worth investing in your own equipment such as a trimmer on a long pole that will allow you to do this yourself.

Prevent your pipes from freezing

One of the biggest sources of weather damage to real estate is flooding caused by pipes freezing and bursting. Such flooding can be catastrophic and cause a great deal of problems, but it can be avoided if you make sure the water in your pipes stays liquid. To do this it’s important to gently heat your home whenever the outside temperature gets to around zero, even if you aren’t going to be in the property. In this case, you can use an automated or smart thermostat to help you do this.
