Is self-tanner safe for pregnancy?
Self-tanning products are another option with low risk while pregnant. DHA is usually the main ingredient in self-tanners. The FDA has approved small amounts of DHA for cosmetic use. You would need to apply large amounts of self-tanner to see an effect on your milk supply later on.
Some ingredients in self-tanner can be harmful, so you should use a self-tanner that doesn’t have these ingredients. You can find organic tanning options that are made with natural ingredients. These include products such as aloe, chamomile, coconut oil and grape seed extract.
Pro tip: If you don’t want to use a self-tanner that contains DHA, look for one that contains erythrulose (pronounced air-ith-roo-lows).
Self-tanners are safe if you avoid getting them on your nipples or breast area when feeding your baby. Once the product has dried, it’s unlikely to contact the milk supply.
You should apply petroleum jelly to sensitive parts of your breasts to protect them from any Sun exposure or fake tan.
