Improving Your Home Security Levels

Help To Spread Our Content!

Crime seems to be on the rise all around the world. It is a sad fact, but one that we cannot ignore nor deny. Because of this, you need to do all you can in order to protect your home from any potential intruders. There are lots of different home security methods available nowadays and you should take advantage of as many as feasibly possible. Read on to discover some top tips for improved home security.

Alarm systems are more effective when they are obvious

Your alarm system will be much more effective if potential intruders are aware of it, rather than if it is hidden. If your alarm system at your home is evident then it acts as a deterrent. This means that it has a dual purpose; not only does it warn you of any trespassers but it also scares them off as well. If your alarm system is hidden then burglars are more likely to target you. After all, they will not believe you have ample security measures in place and therefore they will aim to try and take advantage of this. It is also worth bearing in mind the fact that you have nothing to gain via attempting to hide your alarm. At the end of the day, the alarm system may make a loud noise, but it only does so once the break-in occurs. Therefore, wouldn’t you rather increase your chances of a break-in not happening at all?

Be original and avoid home security clichés

If you still hide your key under the doormat, then the truth is that you are not actually hiding it at all. This is an example of one of several home security clichés, another one being when people leave their key under the plant pot. The truth is that these are the two places people are most likely to look at first. You need to think of something original. When you find somewhere you need to ask yourself whether anyone else is likely to look there. If the answer is yes, then find somewhere different!

Make sure you have a quality alarm system installed

This sounds like an obvious point. However, you would not believe how many people still have a basic alarm system installed from years and years ago. This is often because they are worried about the cost of a home security system. But with so many different alarm systems available today, you are bound to find something that fits into your budget. Plus, the functionality of these systems has extended considerably. You can now easily manage your property’s access from your phone no matter where in the world you are. Furthermore, there are a lot of people that have no idea whether it is still working or not because they do not perform the regular checks required. It goes without saying that if you wish to benefit from optimum home security you need to have a quality alarm system installed by a credible security company.

Being web wise is now essential when it comes to protecting your home

Over the past few years, we have not only seen a surge in the number of people who use the Internet, but also a shift in regards to the way it is used. Social networking websites, for example, have boomed over the past few years. However, as social networking takes off, more and more people are becoming too open about their lives. For instance, there’s the ‘check-in’ feature and ‘add your location’ option on lots of different websites and networks nowadays. This may seem like a lot of fun, but when you tell everyone you are excited to take the whole family to Ireland next week, you are also telling potential intruders that your house is going to be empty. There have been a whole host of high profile burglaries whereby celebs have had their houses raided when they have been on holiday, as they have been updating their Instagram accounts with photographs of their lavish ski trips and such like! There is nothing wrong with posting photos but you should wait until you have gotten home.

Redirect your mail when on holiday

Another trick to make sure your home is not targeted while you are abroad is to redirect your mail to someone’s house you trust, whether this is a friend or family member. Or, if you are friends with your neighbour, ask if he or she can collect your mail for you while you are not there. If you have a letterbox and the mail starts to stack up, people will quickly realise that you are not home and this could lead to your property being a target.

Make sure you shine a light at night

And last but not least, a recommended home security method is simply to keep your lights turned on at night time. After all, burglars are going to be a lot less likely to strike if there is a greater chance they will be seen whilst doing so. The dark house at the end of the street is a lot easier to sneak into than the brightly lit house at the other end.

The points mentioned in this article are basic home security tips that everybody can and should implement. After all, it is imperative that you protect your home. The last thing you want to do is give burglars the opportunity to commit a terrible crime.
