When you’re decorating an apartment, there are fewer spaces to decorate and fewer walls to hang things on. But the thing is, there are only so many mirrors that you can hang to ‘reflect the light’ and ‘open the room up,’ because at the end of the day, having an apartment will generally mean less space. But decorating the space can be really fun, whether you are moving to a new apartment, or want to decorate what you already have. You don’t have to compromise on style, just because there is less space. So with that in mind, here are some tips and ideas for decorating your apartment; it would be great to hear what you think.
Starting from scratch and decluttering all of the ‘stuff’ that you have collected over time is a must. You might be someone that finds this easy; you might be someone that genuinely finds it hard. You might want to start with the ‘junk’ and clutter that is taking up storage space, or go ahead with the furniture. If you’ve collected bits of furniture over time that don’t really go together, then it could be time to upgrade to some better quality and cohesive pieces. Having a blank slate to work with, if it is possible, can be a really good thing.
Think about the function that you need
When it comes to your home, you need to think about what you actually need it to do. For example, if you are a single person in an apartment, having a nice large dining table could seem like a good idea. But on a practical level, even if you have friends around, you’re not going to get the use out of it that would make it worth taking up the space. Would a breakfast bar, or a much smaller table do instead? Think practically about the use of each room in the apartment, and what would be necessary for those functions. Don’t overload an already small space.
Each room a color scheme
If you have only a few rooms in the apartment, then a nice way to decorate is to give each room its own personality with its own color scheme. You could make a start with some specific color schemes, and then when you move from room to room, it will feel like a distinct and separate space from what you have had before.
Appropriate sized furniture
When you have a small space, as has been mentioned above, you need to think about the practicality of it all. That is why it is important to buy some furniture that fits the space well, rather than just getting one because you like the look of it. There will be smaller options, or better fitting options that will look just as good too. You could create a cozy space to eat in a kitchen, if you have furniture that is appropriately sized. Otherwise it could be too much and look out of place and leave the room feeling cramped.
You might have heard time and time again, that if you have a small space, you need to invest in some pieces that have different functions. This can be a good way to save space, but also make it all much more practical. This could be a bed that is an ottoman-style bed, meaning that it can lift up and have plenty of storage space underneath. This could be a breakfast bar that could also function as a desk, or a coffee table that has plenty of storage.
One of the best things to think about is making use of any vertical space that you have. There is a lot of space that can be used up walls and even the ceiling. Above doors is often wasted space, but you could easily put in a floating shelf to store books, baskets, shoes, or luggage, for example. Don’t forget to look up in your apartment and use that space wisely as well.
Don’t forget about the bathroom
The bathroom is a room in the house that can get forgotten about, but it can be a great option when you’re looking for some extra space. The walls in the bathroom can be great for additional storage, especially vertically. Storing towels on shelving can be a good idea, as well as using the vanity unit for storage. Don’t think that you have to only have bathroom-related items in there. You can use it for anything that you like!
