If you have decided you’re going to take your first camping trip, it is important to be prepared. One of the worst things you can do is go camping and then realize that you have the wrong tent or you have made another type of rookie error that ruins your trip.

With that being said, read on to discover more about some of the most common camping errors people make so that you can be sure you don’t make the same blunders.

Not paying attention to plants – This is one of the most common mistakes people tend to make when they are camping. If you are unable to identify poisonous mushrooms, sumac, oak, or any other common poisonous plants, you may run into quite a bit of trouble when you are on your camping trip. You could end up with serious rashes all over your body if you even accidentally brush up against a poison sumac plant depending on the time of year. You can easily find plant identification guides online that are cheap and a great tool to have with you.

Forgetting about navigation – Have you thought about how you are going to get around the woodland area and enjoy the surroundings? Most people today will navigate with GPS, so don’t forget to sort this out for your trip. Of course, you could go old school with a compus but that is a bit risky for your first time camping!

Poor food preparation – Another mistake a lot of people make is bringing food that spoils. Do not trust a simple cooler to keep your meats cool for four to five days at a time. You need food that is not going to perishable in order to ensure that you have plenty to eat throughout your trip. Make sure you bring along easy foods such as bread, peanut butter, trail mix, and so on. Think about nutrition as well, as you’re going to need your energy. Don’t forget to bring some trash bags either.

Choosing the wrong tent – Last but not least, we cannot mention camping errors without talking about people choosing the wrong tent. Tents vary in terms of their set-up, style, features, and quality. You need to make sure you select the right tent for you. Size is definitely one of the most important factors. No one wants to be in a tent that is too small. You need to count on at least 30 square feet for each person. Make sure the tent you choose is going to be able to stand up to any sort of harsh weather conditions. You also need to check the fabric, poles, and zippers before you leave for the campsite.

So there you have it: some of the most common camping errors that people tend to make when they are going on this type of trip for the first time. We hope that this helps you to have a safe and successful camping trip!
