Verizon has first AR/VR smartphone – ASUS ZenFone AR

As most of you know, I am in total love with the Moto Z line of smartphones from Verizon, but over the past couple of weeks I have been checking out a new smartphone that Verizon now offers the ASUS ZenFone AR. Smartphones are so important to our lives when it comes to not only staying connected, but they have come so far to help us with daily tasks and making life just a bit more fun.

ASUS ZenFone AR

Using the ASUS ZenFone AR, the world’s first smartphone that supports both Google Tango augmented reality (AR) and Google Daydream virtual reality (VR) technologies. For you, this means totally new ways to game, be entertained and shop using cutting-edge technology from the comfort of your couch. The ZenFone AR is available only on Verizon for $27 a month for 24 months ($648 retail price).

Using Verizon’s powerful 4G LTE network and Tango (Google’s core AR technology), the ZenFone AR puts the future of mobile technology in your hands today, by providing incredible experiences that expand your vision and stretch the imagination. To date, there are more than 35 Tango-compatible apps on Google Play, and ASUS and Google are partnering with well-known brands to bring even more AR fun to your ZenFone AR. Here are a few applications that showcase the ZenFone AR and how it can augment your reality.

I am not going to lie right now but I never really jumped ont he AR/VR bandwagon. I don’t know why but it never really appealed to me for some reason. I do play games on my phone in my free time but never really understood the reason I would want to spend all that money to be immersed in my games but after using this phone for awhile I have come to understand the appeal better and using the ZenFone AR you can do so much more than playing games.

Do More Than Just Play Games

So I know many of you might not play as many games but using the ZenFone AR really helps you to do more. One of my favorite sites that I shop at is Wayfair, no this posting is not sponsored by them. I just enjoy shopping their site, and they have amazing deals on furniture all the time!

But when you are purchasing furniture you want to be able to see what it’s going to look like right?

Using this phone, you can Virtually redecorate your living room with ease using the Wayfair shopping app to see how your furniture looks in your home without all the heavy lifting. You can also be sure that your dream couch will fit in your living room since Wayfair’s virtual 3D furniture is at full-scale. And furniture is just the start. You can use the large 5.7” display to view clothing on a virtual model before you commit and fire up the BMW iVisualizer app to spec out a new BMW i3 or i7 right in your den.

I just love being able to check out how something is going to look or if it is going to fit before I actually buy it! This is one of the best features for me because since I am a huge shopper it helps me make great decisions.

For The Gamers

So if you do enjoy games this phone is for you just as much as it is for shoppers like me. For gamers, the ZenFone AR offers the most immersive gaming experience available on a smartphone. Using the latest motion tracking and depth perception technology you can interact with virtual objects that appear to be in the real world. In non-techy terms, that means you can blast zombies with splashes of color in Color Alive 2.0 or build and knock over a virtual Domino display on your bedroom floor. The ASUS ZenFone AR is also fully compatible with the Google Daydream View virtual reality headset, allowing users to enjoy VR games and movies in full cinematic glory thanks to the smartphone’s 5.7” high-resolution and high-contrast display.

I actually checked out the Color Alive 2.0, and it is so freaking cool! Here are some images from my experience with a couple of apps.

After using this phone for awhile, I have come to find that I actually do enjoy the immersive gaming experience and how lifelike and fun everything is to explore.

Work and play is just the start. The ASUS ZenFone AR is also a great learning tool for you and your children. Apps like Lumin offer a mobile tour of the Detroit Institute of Arts and provide visitors with a new, in-depth way to engage with the collection. Walk around the museum with your phone, and it will overlay videos, photographs, sounds and touch-activated animations on the screen to provide additional information and details not normally seen by the public. Moving outside the museum, Dinosaurs Among Us lets you bring the American Natural History Museum into your home. See a dinosaur walk around your kitchen and learn about the latest research straight from museum scientists.

Let’s Chat About The ZenFone AR Itself!

So I am a huge “looks” person when it comes to purchasing phones. I want something that looks sleek and functions perfectly. The ZenFone AR is actually very sleek. It does not really have any wow factors, but it makes up for this in all that you can do with it. The screen for me is the perfect size at 5.7″ which is large enough to do all of your daily tasks.

Another huge selling point for me is the camera itself. The ZenFone has a 23 MP Camera and the front camera coming in at 8 MP which will give you brilliant images for sharing via social media or with friends.

The last point that I always look at is the battery. Personally, I need something that will last throughout the day. The ZenPhone has a 3,300 mAh, Non-removable battery installed. I did have a little bit of a problem keeping the phone going all day, but that was with a ton of use. I was tweeting, taking images, sending pictures, playing games, and emailing. I found that the battery did run down rather quickly, compared to my Moto Z but the charging time was awesome. It does charge rather quickly.

In all, because of all that you can do with the ZenFone AR, I would recommend checking it out. I loved that you can use this for so much more than just gaming and that I can use it with Wayfair is super cool (I shop way too much in life). If you are looking for a new phone, this might just be perfect for you. The one thing that the ZenFone AR needs is a great network to go with your great phone!
